Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Wedding DJ

Ask these of every DJ you're considering, including me. A professional will have quick, specific answers. Vague ones tell you something too.

Will you personally be the DJ at my wedding? Some companies book you with one person and send another. You should know exactly who's showing up.
Do you MC, and how would you describe your style? You want clear, warm, and brief. Not a radio voice, not a hype man, not silence.
How do you handle the timeline? Look for a questionnaire, a written run sheet, and coordination with your coordinator and photographer.
What happens if the timeline changes on the day? The answer should be "it usually does, here's how I adjust," not a blank look.
Can we give you a do-not-play list, and will you honor it? Without exception. Same for clean versions only and guest requests, yes or no.
Do you provide ceremony audio? If your ceremony is outside or in a separate space, it needs its own system and an officiant mic. Here's what that looks like.
What equipment do you bring, and is it sized to my venue? A 60-person hall and a 250-person barn need different setups. Ask about lighting too.
When does the clock start? Setup shouldn't count against your hours. Setup and teardown are never billed. Your time starts when your ceremony or event starts.
What does it cost to add an hour if the party's going? There should be a number. Extra hours can be added the night of your event at $200 per hour.
What reserves the date, and when is the balance due? A signed agreement and a $250 non-refundable deposit reserve your date. The deposit applies toward your total. The remaining balance is due four weeks before your event.
Can we see reviews from real weddings? Recent, specific, and from your area. Mine are here.
Have you worked my venue? Not a deal-breaker if they haven't, but a DJ who knows the room saves you setup surprises. Venues I've worked.

One more: ask how they'd handle your grandmother's anniversary dance, your brother in a wheelchair at the back of the ceremony, or a live vocalist during the unity candle. A DJ who has actually done these things will tell you exactly how.
